Nine women from across Jefferson, Lewis and St. Lawrence counties received nearly $8,000 in grants through the Maxine M. Quigg Women in Business Fund of the Northern New York Community Foundation. The awards were presented during a reception at The Strand in downtown Watertown.
The recipients are from Antwerp, Canton, Lyons Falls, Carthage, Mannsville, Lorraine and Watertown. The fund provides support for education, training and entrepreneurial efforts for women starting or growing businesses.
Christine Darrow of Antwerp, host and executive producer of WPBS-TV’s “Christine the History Queen,” received funding for public speaking and branding coaching. Jennifer Girard of Canton, a licensed massage therapist at JAG Massage Therapy, received funding to help pursue an associate degree in massage therapy.
Since awards began in 2022, the fund has provided nearly $25,000 to 25 women in the three-county region. It honors Maxine Quigg, a Jefferson County real estate broker and community and business leader who died unexpectedly in April 2021 while serving on the Community Foundation’s board.
Applications for 2027 funding are expected to open in the spring, with awards planned for the summer. Interested applicants can contact Community Foundation philanthropy associate Emily Pfeil at emily@nnycf.org or 315-782-7110 for an application and additional information.
