Igor Vieira-Bastos, 30, of Brazil, pleaded guilty in July to transporting two people who had crossed the Canadian border near Chateaugay, the U.S. Department of Justice said. U.S. District Judge Mae A. D’Agostino sentenced him to four months in prison.
The DOJ said Border Patrol detected two people crossing the border in March and later stopped a vehicle after the individuals were seen entering it. Vieira-Bastos was identified as the driver, and the two passengers matched the descriptions of the people observed crossing. After completing his sentence, Vieira-Bastos is subject to deportation, according to the DOJ.
