Potsdam Replaces Worn Water Shutoff Boxes During Lead-Line Survey
Potsdam village crews are replacing damaged curbside water shutoff boxes as they excavate service lines for the village’s lead-line inventory.

The Village of Potsdam Department of Public Works is replacing curbside water shutoff boxes found to be rusty, worn or difficult to operate during the village’s restarted survey of water service lines, village officials said at an Oct. 5 trustees meeting.
The survey is intended to help the village inventory nearly 1,400 service lines and identify sections containing lead. Excavations are being conducted near residences’ curb valves, and the DPW is backfilling each site after the line is documented. Haggett Excavating of Norwood is handling the excavation work.
The village began the survey after an earlier scanning process left many service lines undetermined. The project has an estimated cost of $1.077 million, with financing covered by a grant from the New York State Environmental Facilities Corporation. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency requires municipalities to inventory water service lines, with lead lines to be removed over the next decade.
